History Of “Beaujolais Nouveau”
Beaujolais Nouveau comes from the Beaujolais region in eastern France.Although it’s part of Burgundy, this area has its own special winemaking traditions.
In the mid-1800s, local winemakers started a custom of quickly making a young wine right after the grape harvest. They would drink it together to celebrate the seasonโs hard work and good harvest. At first, these wines werenโt sold โ they were just for local festivals or the winemakers themselves.
Starting in the 1950s, this local tradition was promoted to a wider audience. In 1985, France officially set the third Thursday of November as the release date for Beaujolais Nouveau. Since then, it has become a popular event around the world.
On release day, restaurants, bars, and markets across France hold celebrations. People raise their glasses and shout, โLe Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivรฉ!โ โ which means โThe new Beaujolais has arrived!โ It marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of joyful winter gatherings. Itโs not just about a new wine โ itโs also about sharing culture and welcoming a new season.
Beaujolais Cru – A Worthy Rival To Burgundy
When people hear โBeaujolais,โ they often think of the fresh and fruity Beaujolais Nouveau released every November. But the true strength and complexity of Beaujolais wines lie in its ten top villages, known as the Beaujolais Crus. These wines are nothing like the light and playful Nouveau โ instead, they show impressive structure, finesse, and aging potential. Thatโs why theyโre often praised as rivals to red Burgundy.
What makes Beaujolais Crus comparable to Pinot Noir from Bourgogne is their deep connection to terroir and careful winemaking. In top crus like Moulin-ร -Vent, the vineyards grow on poor, rocky soils such as granite or schist. These conditions force the Gamay vines to root deeply, absorbing more minerals and producing wines with greater complexity and backbone.
Many top producers use traditional fermentation methods similar to those in Burgundy. This brings out more tannins and depth in the wine. After aging in oak barrels or bottles, these wines develop layered aromas of plum, black cherry, earth, spices, and even mushroom or leather โ much like classic Pinot Noir. The body becomes fuller and smoother with time.
In short, Beaujolais Crus masterfully combine the vibrant fruit of Gamay with the depth and elegance of exceptional terroir. They offer the refinement and complexity of Burgundy reds, while keeping Gamayโs natural freshness and juiciness โ making them one of Franceโs most underrated yet outstanding red wines, right alongside Pinot Noir.
