Domaine History

Established in 1881, Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s most historic and respected wine estates, with five generations dedicated to producing wines of elegance and authenticity. Their Barbaresco DOCG reflects a classic approach, sourced from selected vineyards in Treiso and San Rocco, and crafted to express the finesse and balance that define great Nebbiolo.

Terroir

The Nebbiolo grapes come from hillside vineyards with calcareous clay and marl soils in Barbaresco’s prime crus. The unique microclimate, along with careful vineyard management, promotes slow, even ripening—allowing full aromatic expression and structural refinement.

Winemaking

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented at controlled temperatures with extended maceration. The wine matures for three years, including 30 months in French oak barrels (a mix of large casks and barriques), followed by additional bottle aging. This traditional method ensures complexity, elegance, and longevity.

Tasting Notes

A classic-style Barbaresco, showing elegance, finesse, and balanced structure. The bouquet opens with raspberries, currants, red plums, strawberries, shredded cedar, pink grapefruit, pomegranate, and bay leaves. Underlying notes of roasted hazelnuts and green tea add depth to the aromatic profile. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with perfectly ripe tannins and a balsamic, nuanced finish. Splendid from the start but built to evolve beautifully over time.

An elegant, complex Barbaresco with refined tannins, vibrant freshness, and long aging potential—a true expression of Nebbiolo purity and Piedmont tradition.

Pairing

Ideal with truffle risotto, braised meats, roasted lamb, game dishes, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno and Parmigiano Reggiano.
