Domaine History
Founded in 1981 on the Tuscan coast, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia has earned its place among Italy’s most prestigious estates. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, often called the “second wine” of the estate, showcases the same care and philosophy as Ornellaia itself, offering a youthful yet sophisticated interpretation of the Bolgheri terroir.
Terroir
The vineyards of Ornellaia are located on the sunlit slopes near the Tyrrhenian Sea, with diverse soils including clay, limestone, and gravel. The Mediterranean climate, moderated by sea breezes and significant diurnal temperature differences, provides the perfect environment for Bordeaux grape varieties to achieve ripeness while maintaining balance and aromatic expression.
Winemaking
Each grape variety is harvested and vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs partly in oak barrels, followed by 15 months of aging in French oak (25% new). After blending, the wine is aged an additional 6 months in bottle, enhancing its balance, complexity, and refinement.
Tasting Notes
Displaying its characteristic intense color, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2019 opens with fresh aromas of ripe red fruits, followed by lively balsamic notes, including hints of cypress berry and eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is smooth and silky, filling the mouth with an elegant tannic texture and finishing with savory persistence. A balanced, polished wine offering immediate pleasure with potential for further development.
A vibrant and silky Bolgheri blend, combining the richness of Merlot with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—refined, expressive, and beautifully persistent.
Pairing
Excellent with grilled lamb, roast beef, game, or aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano Reggiano.
