Domaine History
The Mazzei family, with winemaking roots dating back to 1435 at Castello di Fonterutoli, has been at the forefront of innovation in Tuscany. “Concerto di Fonterutoli,” first released in 1981, stands as one of the original Super Tuscans—a symbol of the perfect balance between local tradition and international vision, blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Terroir
The vineyards are located in Castellina in Chianti, at altitudes between 300 and 500 meters. The rocky marl and limestone soils, paired with the area’s Mediterranean climate and significant diurnal temperature variation, provide ideal conditions for producing concentrated and aromatic fruit with vibrant freshness.
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, then vinified separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Aging takes place over 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new), followed by additional bottle aging to refine structure and integrate the blend’s components harmoniously.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a profound and expressive Super Tuscan. Dominated by Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structural depth and texture, the wine opens with abundant black fruit aromas, complemented by spice, herbal nuances, and cedar. On the palate, it is bold and well-defined, with etched tannins, vibrant acidity, and intense fruit concentration. This vintage shows an angular precision and energy, making it especially suited for cellaring and future development. A quintessential “steak buddy” or all-around meat wine, built to age gracefully over time.
A structured, vibrant Super Tuscan with depth, elegance, and excellent aging potential—perfect for grilled meats and robust dishes.
Pairing
Ideal with grilled steaks, lamb chops, wild boar, venison, or aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano Reggiano.
