Domaine History

The Scala family farm traces its history to 1929, when Nevio Scala’s grandparents began working the land at Lozzo Atestino. The project to recover the family vineyards started in 2013, beginning with the Valbona site. Novecentonovantanove ‘R’ is a special edition of the estate’s Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend, made only in the finest vintages after careful vineyard selection and long cellar ageing.

Terroir

The grapes come from volcanic soils at the foot of the Euganean Hills, in Valbona within the municipality of Lozzo Atestino, Padua.

Winemaking

After manual harvesting, the varieties are destemmed and placed separately in stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation starts spontaneously without selected yeasts. The wine ages for about 26 months in concrete; 5% passes through oak tonneaux with periodic bâtonnage of the fine lees. It is bottled without added sulfur dioxide, then ages for another six months in bottle. The producer’s allergen declaration states that the wine contains sulfites.

Tasting Notes

A deep ruby red with aromas of fresh cherry, basil, violet, charred wood, tobacco leaf, and coffee bean. The palate is generous, elegant, and bright, with subtle concentration and a finish marked by earthiness and sweet oak.

A cellar-aged, special-edition Veneto red combining Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

Pairing

Pair with spit-roasted quail, hunter-style pheasant, stewed wild boar, game, and mature or aged cheeses.
