Domaine History
The Mazzei family, winemakers since 1435 at Castello di Fonterutoli, stands as one of the oldest and most respected wine families in Tuscany. “Siepi” represents the flagship cuvée of the estate—a bold yet elegant blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from a single historic vineyard, renowned for its unique terroir and exceptional balance.
Terroir
The Siepi vineyard, located near Castellina in Chianti at 260–330 meters of altitude, benefits from marl-rich soils with limestone and gravel components. The site’s exposure and significant diurnal temperature variation contribute to freshness, concentration, and aromatic complexity.
Winemaking
Each variety is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aging lasts approximately 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new), followed by additional bottle aging to ensure finesse, structure, and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
Described as “perhaps the best vintage of Siepi I have tasted thus far” by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the 2016 vintage is lush and soft, bursting with dark berry intensity. The fruit is dense and compact, supported by notes of sweet spices, tar, rosebud, and sharp mineral nuances reflecting the vineyard’s limestone and gravel soils. The palate is remarkably fine-tuned and elegant, balancing richness with freshness and precision.
A stunning expression of Sangiovese and Merlot, seamlessly blending power and elegance with superb aromatic depth and aging potential.
Pairing
Perfect with roasted lamb, beef filet, wild game, mushroom risotto, or aged Tuscan cheeses like Pecorino.
