History of Portuguese Wine
Portugal boasts a winemaking tradition that spans over 2,000 years, making it one of the world’s oldest wine-producing countries. Since Roman times, wine has played a central role in Portuguese culture. The country is home to over 250 native grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Arinto, and Alvarinho. This biodiversity, along with the influence of varied microclimates and landscapes across regions such as Douro, Tejo, and Alentejo, contributes to a rich array of wine styles—from robust reds and crisp whites to the uniquely refreshing Vinho Verde (green wine).
History of Port Wine
Port wine is Portugal’s most iconic fortified wine, originating in the 17th century. During wartime with France, the British turned to Portugal for wine. To stabilize the wine during long sea voyages, winemakers began adding grape spirit during fermentation, preserving natural sweetness and boosting alcohol content. The result was Port wine—rich, sweet, and enduring. Grown in the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Port’s legacy is tied to both the landscape and centuries-old winemaking traditions.
