Domaine History

Clos Rougeard, one of the most legendary estates in the Loire Valley, was run by the Foucault brothers for generations. Known for their meticulous organic farming and low-intervention winemaking, they elevated Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny to world-class status. “Le Bourg,” sourced from a single old-vine parcel, represents the pinnacle of Clos Rougeard’s production—rare, age-worthy, and deeply expressive.

Terroir

“Le Bourg” comes from a privileged, low-yielding vineyard with old Cabernet Franc vines planted on clay-limestone soils (tuffeau). The site’s excellent sun exposure and mineral-rich soils allow for slow, even ripening, producing grapes of exceptional concentration and balance.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified with native yeasts. The wine is aged for around 24 to 30 months in old French oak barrels, with minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit and the integrity of the terroir. No fining or filtration is performed, ensuring maximum expression and aging potential.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby color with garnet hues. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of black cherries, wild berries, graphite, violets, and earthy undertones, alongside subtle notes of tobacco, leather, and spices. On the palate, it is precise and elegant, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and remarkable depth. The finish is long, mineral, and refined, showcasing purity, finesse, and an incredible capacity for aging.

A legendary Loire Cabernet Franc—powerful yet graceful, with depth, purity, and exceptional aging potential. A true collector’s wine.

Pairing

Perfect with roast duck, venison, grilled lamb, wild mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses such as aged goat cheese and Comté.
