Lorgeril Wine Tasting Class

Since 1580, the ancestors of the Lorgeril family have been cultivating grapes in the Languedoc region of southern France, beginning a winemaking tradition that spans over four centuries.

Today, they own six estates covering a total of 250 hectares of vineyards across eight appellations: Cabardès, Minervois, Minervois-la-Livinière, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, and Languedoc.

Committed to both the environment and tradition, they practice fully organic and sustainable viticulture. As one of the oldest winemaking families in southern France, the Lorgeril estates stand as a timeless symbol of quality, heritage, and harmony with the land, passed down through generations.

Lorgeril—The Century-Old Soul of Languedoc's Terroir

The Lorgeril family has been growing grapes in southern France’s Languedoc region since 1580. In 1620, they built Château de Pennautier, starting a winemaking tradition that has lasted for over 400 years. The château was founded by Pierre Louis de Pennautier, a well-known figure at the time, and by the 17th century, its wines were already served at the tables of French royal officers — a sign of the estate’s early prestige.

Since then, 12 generations of the family have been dedicated to growing grapes and making wine. Today, they own six estates, with a total of 250 hectares of vineyards, across eight official wine regions (AOCs): Cabardès, Minervois, Minervois-la-Livinière, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, and Languedoc.

All vineyards are farmed using organic and sustainable methods, showing the family’s deep respect for both the environment and tradition. The Lorgeril estates are not only among the oldest winemaking families in southern France, but also a lasting symbol of quality, heritage, and harmony with the land.

This exceptional blend of Cinsault and Grenache is rooted in limestone and schist soils, situated at altitudes between 300 and 400 meters. This high elevation marries Mediterranean warmth with mountain coolness, ensuring slow, optimal ripening that preserves vibrant acidity and refines the tannins—elements crucial for complexity and longevity.

The wine displays an intense ruby red color with purple reflections. The bouquet is rich and expressive, featuring bold notes of black cherry, wild herbs, pepper, and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied and precise, offering silky tannins, concentrated fruit, and a long, spicy finish supported by mineral freshness. This is a Saint-Chinian that delivers both power and finesse, making it ideal for cellaring or pairing with refined cuisine like roast meats and truffle dishes.
